John / Home Tutor In Maidenhead

I have been tutoring Maths and Statistics since 2011. I worked as a Maths teaching assistant at a local secondary school in January 2011 to get some exposure to classroom teaching and to assess whether to switch careers from IT into teaching. After a few days the teachers had enough confidence in my Maths knowledge and my teaching ability to ask me to teach sub-groups of the class. I enjoyed my teaching experience but decided to remain in IT for a few more years. However, the school would continue to receive requests for private tutoring, passing some of them on to me and my tuition experience grew from there, all through word of mouth. I have numerous success stories, including tutoring a girl (for 1-2 hours a week) who 'hated maths' and lacked confidence in her ability and developing her from a predicted 'C' or 'D' grade at Easter, when I started, to an achieved 'A' grade 3 months later. Here are some quotes from written references I have received from other students and parents:

"John Maden was my maths coach for two years from June 2010. Prior to gaining tutoring from him, I was at a D grade level and then went on to obtain an A in my GCSE Maths. John took the time to understand how I learnt best rather than just teaching me in the style that he preferred. He was very patient and took the time to explain parts that I didn't understand and was very enthusiastic and positive. He turned my fear of maths into enjoyment and it was no longer a subject I dreaded. I would thoroughly recommend him to anyone who needs any amount of help with their studies."

"John worked with him for only a few months and Jas's grades consistently became better and better and he went on to get his A* and achieved 100% in one of his maths papers."

"...over only a few months, Kash's ability and confidence improved tremendously.. His grades went up and he began to enjoy maths in a way he hadn't before"

"John built up a great rapport with all 3 boys and helped each of them get a better understanding of maths, along with building up their confidence. They trusted him and listened carefully to his guidance and explanations."

"Growing up I had never been confident with maths and it was my weakest subject at school. I had always struggled with my homework and class tests and, as a result, I was very anxious when starting my GCSEs. I was dependant on my maths GCSE grade, as this would determine if I was able to do my desired A Levels in sixth form. Following a recommendation from a friend, I was introduced to John and I have never looked back. I felt that John had great empathy and was very patient with me at all times. This made me very comfortable to ask him any questions and he never made me feel stupid. My confidence started to grow and, as a consequence, my grades were improving at school. I would really look forward to my maths tutoring every week and it would be a great highlight when I progressed in every session. From being uncertain that I would pass to achieving an A in Maths GCSE proves what a great teacher John is. I was able to study Biology and Chemistry at A Level due to this, and last year I successfully graduated with a 2:1 in Medical Sciences from the University of Leeds - I would not have been able to do all of this without the help from John."

"My husband and I both have the technical ability to tutor maths but neither of us were able to engage in the same way that John did. She felt at ease with him and never afraid to ask questions. Following John's tutoring, Ellen achieved an 'A' grade in Maths and was delighted."

"On a practical level, John was reliable, punctual and honest. I would have no hesitation recommending him for a tutoring position."

"John turned around Meg's whole ability and attitude to maths - she used to dread the school lessons and found it really difficult to understand as her teachers had their way of teaching and that was it - no allowance for those who learn differently. John made it a priority to understand how Meg learns and to teach her that way. He was committed, gave her boundaries, made it fun, without stress, had standards and set homework that had to be done, broke problems/calculations down to the necessary levels, repeated aspects with total patience. Additionally, he was always professional, reliable, punctual and an excellent communicator. I have referred him to numerous other parents over the years who have been equally delighted with the results."

Teaching Approach/Style

I believe that the essence of effective teaching is to capture the attention of students and to convey information and knowledge in a way that maximises their understanding and learning of a topic and their ability to apply their knowledge, cultivating an appreciation and enthusiasm for the subject. Skills needed include patience, empathy, humour, dedication, an ability to explain things simply and clearly, and an ability to inspire interest and bring a topic to life.

My approach to Maths teaching is to start with the fundamentals (basic arithmetic, algebra and fractions - since these underpin many of the other topics) and ensure a thorough understanding and ability to correctly apply such understanding to example questions and exercises. I use homework to validate that the student can tackle such questions on their own. Once I am happy that they have fully grasped the fundamental topics I then work through the other topics in the curriculum, not proceeding from one topic to another until I am satisfied that they have fully mastered the current topic. After completing all topics I then focus on exam preparation - using past papers to get students accustomed to working to exam conditions and get used to the style of exam questions.

I like to think I am empathetic with a high Emotional Quotient - this allows me to engage with students on their individual wavelength, assess what motivates them and makes them tick, and adjust my tutoring style accordingly. Some students lack confidence initially and are afraid to speak up or ask questions if they don't understand something, so I encourage open communication from the start. I am patient and will persevere until I am happy that a student has grasped a topic and can apply the theoretical principles correctly, through worked examples and exercises.

I mainly teach GCSE Maths but have also tutored several pre-GCSE students, and also several 'AS' and A- Level Maths students, as well as a few Statistics students (either as a GCSE, or as part of a Maths AS or A-Level).

I can provide tutoring references, along with my degree certificate, and A-Level and 'O' Level certificates, as required.
