Philip / Home Tutor In Dorking

I hold a PhD in applied mathematics with speciality in theoretical physics. I have over 10 years' tutoring experience with over a hundred students; virtually all of whom achieved the grades they needed.

I supervised problem classes for two first-year undergraduate mathematics modules at university and I currently tutor students of all abilities. I have experience with IB and Cambridge Step and all the main examination boards. Anything I am unfamiliar with I am happy to look up provided I'm given notice, hence I will consider tutoring university modules, depending how far off they are from my beaten track.

I also have a fair amount of experience with students who, for whatever reasons, have fallen behind, e.g. students going into second year of A-Level or GCSE on an E grade or lower from the year before. In these cases, it is always possible to turn things around, although a structured programme of study must be be agreed...which I stress will require multiple hours of weekly work on the part of the student. If in such cases I feel the student isn't doing what is required of them, I am very quick to inform the parents so that they can decide as to how they want to continue.

Teaching Approach/Style

I teach topics through doing the related problem exercises; you don't understand the theory until you can use it to solve tangible problems. In practice, this means focusing on a problem set taken from the student's materials and, when problems arise, we go back over the related theory briefly filling in any gaps. We do this until the student is solving most of the problems and then, and only then, do we start a new topic. It is a fail safe approach because only moving on once you have learnt something properly puts down strong foundations and that is when the confidence comes.
